Ekwema Cultural Heritage Foundation (ECHF) is a not-for-profit and non-political organization of indigenes of Owere Nshi Ise (Owerri Municipal Area Council). The Foundation is committed to fostering peace, harmony, and sustainable development in the Owerri Municipal Area Council.
Membership is open to indigenes of Owere Nshi Ise, with very high morals, integrity and sense of purpose. The activities of the Foundation are open and transparent.
The Ugwu Ekwema Heritage Centre represents our symbol of oneness, unity and common heritage. It is our traditional assembly ground. Over the years it has become the fulcrum of the celebration of our culture and history, and solemn remembrance of our founding father, Ekwema Arugo.
Oru Owere festival is an annual event of the indigenes of the traditional five villages (Umuoronrojo, Amawon, Umuodu, Umueche and Umuoyima) that make up Owere Nshi Ise – the Owerri Municipal. The event is celebrated every year at Ugwu Ekwema Heritage Centre in remembrance and commemoration of the first place of settlement and sanctuary of our founding father, Ekwema Arugo.
Regrettably, the Ugwu Ekwema has not been given appropriate recognition and status as the first home of our founding father. It has not been properly preserved and developed as a Heritage Centre and a tourist site. Furthermore, it has an uncompleted project which has been abandoned for many years. It will be very sad and unfortunate if this noble project is allowed to rot.
The proposed project has provision for a Town Hall, Heritage Museum, Restaurant, Skill Acquisition Centre, meeting rooms, offices, etc. If the project is completed it will be of immense benefit to the indigenes of Owere Municipal, the State Capital, and the entire Imo State. The benefits will include, among others:
The Ugwu Ekwema Heritage Civic Centre represents our symbol of oneness, unity and common heritage. It is our traditional assembly ground for Oru Owere festival, a solemn remembrance of our founding father – Ekwema Arugo. Regrettably, Ugwu Ekwema has not been properly preserved and developed. It has an abandoned project which umu Owere want to complete. If the project is completed, it will generate revenue that will not only make the Centre self-sustaining but supports other community projects. The estimated cost is about N500M. Please send your contributions to: Ekwema Cultural Heritage Foundation (ECHF); UBA, A/C No.: 1026007758. This initiative is being powered by Ekwema Cultural Heritage Foundation (ECHF), a not-for-profit and non-political organization of umu Owere.
Thank you for being part of this noble project.
